California homeowners in high fire-risk areas will soon need non-combustible gates and fencing near their homes. On August 19, 2026, the California Board of Forestry and Fire Protection approved final "Zone 0" defensible space regulations, the first rules of their kind in the nation. The regulations cover the five feet immediately surrounding a home and require that any new gate or fence attaching to a structure in that zone be built from non-combustible material. Existing wood fences and gates can still be repaired, but new installations in Zone 0 must comply once the rules take effect.
The rules apply to homes in State Responsibility Areas and Very High Fire Hazard Severity Zones, designations that cover a real share of Orange County's coastal and inland communities, from foothill neighborhoods to canyon-adjacent properties. Implementation phases in over several years, with education first and enforcement later, but insurance carriers are already factoring defensible space compliance into coverage decisions.

If you're in a high fire-risk zone and planning a gate or fence project, it's worth confirming your materials meet the new standard now rather than retrofitting later. Metal gates and fencing were already a durable, low-maintenance choice, they're now also the compliant one.
